NEW RUST INHIBITOR STOPS RUST, PROTECTS AQUEOUS QUENCH SYSTEMS EQUIPMENT AND IN-PROCESS WORK; EASILY CONTROLLED, WORK IS EASY TO CLEAN
Synthetic water dilutable quenchants such as Aqua-Quench 365 have built-in rust inhibition that usually provides ample protection for work and internal steel parts of quenching systems. But, as good as this inhibition is, it can deplete over a period of time depending on the amount of work put through. At low use concentrations and high production levels, this can occur more rapidly.
However, there is no reason to dump the solution and install fresh quenchant. This would be uneconomical and add to plant effluent. Instead, Aqua-Quench Inhibitor 312 can be added to the system to refresh rust inhibiting properties without affecting quenching speed. It also protects work against rust after work is removed from the quenchant.
If the aqueous quenching bath is operated at a low concentration, Aqua-Quench Inhibitor 312 doesn’t affect fire resistance. It contains no mineral oil, so aqueous quenching solutions remain less hazardous, without oil, smoke or pollution.
To maintain rust inhibition without disturbing quenching characteristics, Aqua-Quench Inhibitor 312 concentrations must be properly controlled; this is easily accomplished by the “Nail Rust Test”, a simple check which any plant can easily perform.
FEATURES
· Inhibits rust on quench tank and ferrous accessories
· Protects work after quench
· Fire resistant - no mineral oil
· Work is easy to clean
· Ideal to supplement protection in low concentrations of Aqua-Quench 365 solutions
HOW TO USE
Add 1% Aqua-Quench Inhibitor 312 to the total volume of the system.
HOW TO MEASURE CONCENTRATION
A simple in-plant test quickly shows whether or not steel equipment is protected against corrosion. The “Nail Rust Test” is easy to conduct and will tell you if your system needs replenishment with Aqua-Quench Inhibitor 312.
NAIL RUST TEST
The Nail Rust Test shows if the inhibitor concentration is at the correct level to give the longest protection. Rust occurs faster when the inhibitor is diluted or consumed.
Materials
Three ten penny nails (clean with emery cloth or shot blasting)
Three 4-ounce jars and covers (washed and rinsed)
One 8-ounce container of used solution from tank
Tap water
Procedure
Prepare three solutions in the 4-ounce jars as follows. Then, partially immerse the nail, cover and shake to thoroughly wet the nail.
Test Jar No. |

Amount |
1 |
Used quenching solution |
3 ounces |
2 |
Parts used solution 1 part water |

3 |
1 part used solution 2 parts water |
1 ounce 2 ounces |
A clean, ten penny nail, partially immersed in water, will show some rust within four hours, and more rust in 24 hours. Thus, if no rust appears, there is obviously rust inhibition in the aqueous quenching solution.
Interpretation
If no rust appears within 24 hours or nails in all three jars, then the system is protected.
Result of Test |
Add Aqua-Quench Inhibitor 312 |
All three nails rusted |
1% to system |
Rusted nails in test jars 2 and 3 (2:1 and 1:2) |
.66% to system (2/3 gal./100 gal.) |
Only one rusty nail in jar (1:2) |
.33% to system (1/3 gal./100 gal.) |
No rust nails |
No addition needed |
After adding Aqua-Quench Inhibitor 312 if needed, prepare new nails, take another fresh sample of solution from the quench tank and repeat the test for another 24 hours.
If no rust shows up in the solutions after this 24 hour period, dispose of the three test solutions and start three new test solutions. Continuing tests of fresh solutions will show any change in the inhibitor concentration as it is consumed or diluted during operations.
No additional inhibitor is required as long as the three solutions show no rust on the nails and there is no rust on the equipment.
HOW TO CLEAN
Residue from Aqua-Quench Inhibitor 312 solutions, along with Aqua-Quench 365 solutions, are easily removed by a plain water rinse.
